Marriage
From Pants On Fire
[edit] Taxes
In the 1999 Budget Gordon Brown removed the Married Couples' Allowance.[1]
In December 2006 the Government made a statement to the BBC in relation to a "marriage tax allowance". John Hutton said -
- "the idea that there's a tax break we can design that's going to keep families together is nonsense. We had this in the 60s, 70s and 80s and divorce went through the roof."[2]
Following the Tory party conference in September 2007 where they outline several popular policies including a pledge to recognise marriage in the tax system the Chief Secretary to the Treasury Andy Burnham, a cabinet minister, outlined in an interview to the BBC that Taxes should recognise marriage.[3]
A complete U-Turn.
